Mr Frost the Needle Felted Snowman

Wonderfully warm and fully felted welcomes to this some what frosty edition of the TM blog.

Although we are far, far away from Christmas I know all too well we creatives like to be well organised and well planned with our Christmas projects. This is why I tend to start my Christmas Makes in June/July.

Well on this Frosty edition of the TM blog I thought it would be appropriate to introduce you to another new character Mr Frost a needle felted sculpture.

Mr Frost like Pennie Penguin has been made with wool fiber and a single felting needle. Mr Frosts design came about a desire to create something a little different in snowman terms as there are many needle felted snowmen around of a similar style.

There are lots of hanging snowmen for the tree, so I felt it was time to create something a little different that could be more of an eye catching stand alone table decoration or just a lovely ornament to have on your mantle.

Like Pennie Penguin Mr Frost did not come to life until his eyes we set in, so I can reassure you once again that Mr Frost was harmed during his creation and he would not have felt a thing!

Without further delay I give you Mr Frost.

Its a Teddy Bears Picnic with Guest Star Lily the Lamb...

Hello and a very happy Friday to all you lovely makers, creators and well all round lovely people!Today we bring you fun and frolics at the Teddy Bears picnic of the year. Hosted by Bear grace created by Burman Bears and special guest of honour Tigerlily Makes very own Lily Lamb!

What a flurry of activity the Handmade Boutique was on Tuesday, with preparations for the event of the year... the Burman Bears annual Teddy Bears picnic! Well this picnic was to be like no other picnic, as it was to play host to one very special guests Lily Lamb and  Grandma Lily Lamb!

Well what a day, Lily and Grandma Lily had, so many new bears to meet it was such the social event with laughter, fun, games and plenty of food to be had. Lily had fun with all the bears, but she was particularly taken with one or two special characters! Bear Grace was in so much adoration of Lily that she scooped her up and hugged her dearly.

With the first introductions successfully underway it was time to mingle and mingle they did, with all the bears and Lambs keen to chat and play games.

Well one of many great introductions was Lily Lamb and Bloo the Elephant, this pair really hit it off and as Lily said "Oh Bloo don't be blue I will be your friend" and so it was!

After much fun, it was time to leave and what better way to say goodbye to your wonderful hosts than with a friendly kiss to seal the friendship! Come back soon for more picnic stories!

Tigerlily Makes joins the Handmade Movement at Handmade Boutique Birmingham

Well hello, lovely makers creators, felt folk and all round lovely people! Welcome to the latest edition of the Tigerlily Makes Blog!

Today I am very excited to be sharing with you a beautiful shop in The Great Western Arcade in Birmingham, call the Handmade Boutique. I have been invited to join this wonderful boutique and unique concept.

The Handmade Boutique was first founded in 2012 with a temporary pilot scheme to test the market and to see if designer handmade products could be brought to the high st! Well 2 years on the first permanent Handmade Boutique has been a roaring success and is now passed its first year of trading.

I am delighted to say that Tigerlily Makes has been invited to take part in this unique concept and has already installed an array of  Lily lamb and hand felted products.

My main aim with this boutique is to specialise in my much adored and loved Character Lily Lamb and my much coveted Alice In Wonderland inspired range. Lily Lamb as you know is Tigerlily Makes official mascot, character and product range, so far we have Lily Lamb fridge magnets, mirrors, key rings and notebooks. Following on from this we have Colouring books in the making as well as tea towels. Later in the year I will be doing a range of notebooks and notebook bumper packs as well as a whole host of other products.

As for the Alice range, I will be expanding this range to including new greetings card designs, shadow frame designs and more of the hand felted blocks.

For now thought I think I will just leave you with a few of the lovely midlands and UK produced Tigerlily Makes product lines!

Retiring from the forces and feeling your way through felt!

Hello and welcome to the latest edition of the Tigerlily Makes blog! I can't quite believe how much time has passed since we last chatted.

Today I wanted to bring you something really special. A couple of years ago I met a wonderful lady called Angie, Angie was in the forces as was her husband. After many years of service they both decided that it was time for a new direction and time to look towards having a family.

When I met Angie she had already brought her beautiful son into the world and had begun the process of withdrawing from the forces. Part of the process when you leave the forces is to find a new life, new interests and begin to move your non-forces life forward. This can sometimes be a long process, as part of this process Angie was offered courses to find new skills and interests. A couple of those course were spent on felt making courses at Tigerlily Makes.

Angie took to felting like a natural and it was so wonderful to see the enjoyment in Angie's face whilst she was felting. It was such a contrast from her previous life.

Well after those courses, Angie kept in touch with progress and to replenish supplies for her new found passion.

A couple of years later, Angie has continued with her love of felting, has moved overseas and is quite literally about to give birth to her second child.

I am so pleased that Angie has found a passion for felt making and making with felt, its great that she has been able to continue and literally transport her passion overseas.

So I think I will leave you with some of her wonderful work. Thank you Angie for coming on the course and sharing the experiences, I have loved every minute.

The Fully Felted Life... has all too often been a bumpy one!

Well hello and welcome to the latest edition of the Tigerlily Makes Blog, today I am breaking with tradition and am sharing some of the professional and personal obstacles that I have had to overcome these past few years.

Firstly let me give you a little insight as to my creative background.

My love affair with creative arts started at school with needle work and textile arts. I quickly realised that I had a natural flair and ability to create wonderful things with threads, fabric, ribbons, buttons and left over bits and bobs. After a short time I began making things for family and friends adding finishing touches to a room such as a roman blind, customising bags and making unique accessories. Then interest in creative pastimes continued into adulthood, where I was able to save money by making and customising not only my wardrobe but home too. Over the past 30+ years I have continued to develop skills in all areas of creativity, from creating decorative items for the home, up-cycling, paper crafting and felt-making.

By 2007 I was offered a position as a demonstrator for Bramwells Crafts, I was trained and accredited by Bramwells to deliver workshops, demonstrations, talks and product knowledge. I traveled the length and breadth of the UK and have also been published by a leading magazines.

I also discovered felt making around this time too, looking for new mediums to mix into my demos.  I wanted to learn how to make my own as I was so unimpressed with the manufactured craft felt at the time. I loved it so much that I just wanted to do more. I bought a techniques book and went on a few courses, which led to me taking a 1 year City and Guilds course in felt making.

In 2010  Tigerlily Makes was born and what I believed  was going to be my dream job! All too soon this dream was crushed as I was faced with a barrage of obstacles from a number of parties, who just seem to have only one goal in mind and that was to crush my dreams and my business into nothing.

Over the past four/five years I have to deal with a cavalcade of issues,  I have faced copyright battles both in terms of my own copyright being infringed and being accused of breaching copyright. Luckily mediation was delivered and issues were resolved, but it all had a devastating effect on my health, my well being and my creative design business. It left me feeling inhibited to design,  it rocked my confidence to the core and put me behind design wise for a good 18 months!

So intent were some parties in removing me from my creative corner, that I was bombarded for 6 long months with an insistence that I have my business valued for the purpose of selling out.  "THE" bidder rang me nearly every week for 6 long months, insisting I make an appointment to have my business valued! I just could not believe my ears!

I was paralysed by the fact that people would watch my every move, to see what I was doing next and then use it to their advantage before I had even gotten a chance to use it to my own.

In between all this, I had problems with landlords taking advantage of the fact I am a small business and self employed. I had a lengthy court battle over some very doggy invoicing and at one point was being over charged rent, when my fellows had been paying less for some considerable time on the recession busting rates.

Then just as I thought I was getting on my feet and beginning to recover and build my confidence and new designs again... my beloved Lily Lamb character became the latest target of copyright infringement! On presenting the findings to the infringer I was met with quite an awful situation. The reactions were so strong and I was deemed a monster! Again I was left feeling like I had been hit by a truck, despite the clear fact that copyright of Lily had been breached! I am glad to say that this infringement has now been halted.

Over these past few years these are just a handful of some of the situations I have had to overcome, my personal life has suffered as a result of all the battling and worrying and my health paid the price... this was all amongst the usual family life of raising my son, being a wife, daughter, daughter in law and the like. I felt like I was being pulled in all directions.

So after the the Lily incident I thought okay, I have been hit with it all now!! well I spoke to soon!

I suppose the biggest shock was having someone infiltrate my life and gain my trust and friendship on the pretense of something else! I am not a poor judge of character by any means, but parties were clever... very clever!  To say I had found myself with a stalker is no exaggeration. A chance meeting led to a friendship that I thought was real and true... this was not the case and after a few years it all started to go badly wrong,  my every move would be watched, my interaction with friends would be watched and then a piggy back of my movements would be carried out by the stalker, seemingly turning up everywhere I went. It was incredibly debilitating and disturbing. This again has now been resolved and steps laid in concrete to prevent this from happening again.

I have been blamed for all that's wrong in peoples life and people just seemed to think that they have the right to speak to me inappropriately, bully me and ride roughshod over my life, without consequence!

Well I am very glad to say that I have come through all of that and have dealt with every aspect of the cards that were dealt with dignity, grace, professionalism and humility. I am back to full health, very happy in what I am doing, with a clear and positive way forward. I am nobody's punching bag and have managed to remove myself from situations forced upon me by acting appropriately and professionally.

I now work from my home studio and outsource certain tasks to service providers and sub contractors in the field when I need to, but I largely run my creative corner by myself with a little help here and there as a I go.

2014 has got off to a great start with the launch of my newly built, fully functioning website, which is already receiving much interest and praise. I was featured in the Jan/Feb edition of Crafts Beautiful with a 2 page interview and plans are well on track for the year ahead. You will also see me in Re-loved Magazine this month with my recycled mobile phone cover tutorial.

I have taken time out to go back to the drawing board and give myself time to do what I do best and that is quality design and creative services. Well I have been designing and making for nearly 35 years now!  I am staying truly focused on my plans for the year, which I set out at the end of last year.

So I guess the reason I am sharing this is because I know being in a creative business, can be very tough and we can all too often wonder why we are doing this and is it all worth it!

Well the answer to that for me is a resounding YES! I absolutely LOVE what I do and its all I want to do. So when you get tough days and people try to drag you down, just remember what it is you love about what you do and hold onto that tightly and NEVER let go. It is and will be worth it.

I am LOVING being back in the design chair and I have renewed excitement and vigor for all that I do and I love seeing the enjoyment in peoples faces when they receive one of my designs, or come on one of my courses. I have set things in place to prevent such horrors from happening in the future and will not allow people to abuse me for their own ends.

We all need to be kind to each other, live and let live as life is SHORT!

With all that I have endured, the obstacles that I have overcome and the  endless hours, days, weeks, months and years of hard work... 2014 is the year that TM reaps the rewards it so deserves.

I am now looking forward to the newest chapter in my life and that is that I am very soon going to become a grandma for the first time! We are expecting the arrival of my grandson in about a months time, his lovely mother to be, my daughter in law and I are already enjoying sharing a love of felting and its such a happy place to be. There's just so much to look forward to this year!

Have a great day and I must leave you all on a high note... my latest design Mr & Mrs Von Tweetling my needle felted Wedding Cake Toppers.

Tigerlily Makes gets a Double Page Feature in Crafts Beautiful

Oh my goodness I am absolutely thrilled to have been interviewed by Crafts Beautiful mag for a double page feature in this months edition.

This has obviously been in the pipeline for quite sometime... but Shhhhh don't tell anyone that... lets just keep that between us! I was absolutely thrilled to have been contacted by CB's editor Sarah Crossland and I believe that I was put forward by CB's Rebecca Ellwood who I have been working closely with  now for quite sometime, on a number of promotional projects. Bekki has always been very supportive of myself and all that is Tigerlily Makes. Bekki has always ensured that I get the best advice when it comes to making the most of advertising and promotional aspects for Tigerlily Makes.

I wasn't quite sure what to expect or how big the feature would be, I found the whole process extremely pleasant, very well organised and I have to say the feature is outstanding! Then the absolute cherry and icing on the cake, was to have my egg cosy kits featured on the front cover!

So don't forget to pick up this months copy of CB and for now keeeeeeeeeeeeep felting!

A New Year, New Designs and a Brand New Website

Wow well what a mammoth few days we have had here at Tigerlily Makes! We have got off to a rip roaring and flying start to 2014 with a brand new website!

What can I say Tigerlily's previous websites and I have not been getting along... over the past four years I have had implemented 2 websites at the advice of media gurus and therefore on that advice have instructed web developers to do what the gurus have advised. After 4 agonising years of being so frustrated with a website that clearly doesn't function with the ease I would like it to, I decided enough was enough!

So I set to, to create my own with web package tools that I could purchase to plan and design exactly what I wanted and how I wanted it to look and function. It was the only way to provide the lovely shoppers, felters and newbie felters in the making with a much more enjoyable and easy shopping experience.

I have to say that I am literally jumping for joy and over the moon with this package. Its taken me 3 days from scratch, including formatting all the artwork from my artwork library  and doing it this way meant that I was fully able to understand the process and how my website functioned.

It is so easy to navigate around and this was my primary concern for anyone using the website. The shopping cart is nicely laid out and easy to use as well as providing shoppers postage options and multiple item discounts!

Hurrah I hear you say and not before time! Its been a long, long and very bumpy road where the website is concerned but at last... 3rd time lucky she says with fingers crossed it is hear and very user friendly.

So really I think there is only one more thing to say that's "Ta Dah" here it is! Hope you like it, click the photo to take a look around the live site.

Stop press kitty sits on lap for first time!

Hello lovely makers, creators and all round lovely people!! Well forgive me for a second kitty post this week, but after yesterday's post about our rescue kitty and not being a lap cat... Well knock me down with a feather!!! Our lovely moggy has sat on my lap for the first time today!!

So here I am getting ready wrapped in my bath towel and I literally have to freeze as Sox paws her way onto my lap, a little hesitation follows and then... Ta dah!!! She sits for a fully 10 minutes!! Sadly I twitched my toe and she shot off!!

But nonetheless this is a fanfare and milestone moment for our 5 year old princess!!

Have a great day everyone!

Hello Princess Kitty Sox

Hello lovely makers, creators and all round lovely people... Today I thought I would introduce my gorgeous princess moggy Sox! Sox is a rescue cat, we had her from a teeny tiny kitten... She was living rough with her brother and her mother and sisters had already gone to Kitty heaven as they had all been run over! She was a very nervous kitten but with time and live she has become more approachable. She is still a very nervous cat, she won't sit on your lap, but she will snuggle next to you.

She is called Sox as she has 4 completely white paws against her velvety black coat like she's wearing little ankle socks.

We love her very much, she doesn't stray too far from home and loves to sleep anywhere other than her kitty bed!!

So here she!

Introducing Kharis from Handcraftily...

Handcraftily (aka Kharis Harvey) is a crafty creator based in a sleepy village in Staffordshire. She spends most of her time recycling and upcycling old jewellery, creating beads from paper and fabric, making gifts for people, and dreaming of a house by the sea! Formerly a college and university lecturer and holistic and talking therapy student, Kharis has always enjoyed making things and believes that everyone should be more creative in their daily lives and that handmade products should be encouraged and promoted by such businesses as the Flutterby Art Boutique!

Kharis’s main passion is Jewellery, although she also loves working with fabrics and clay and has recently been bitten by the steampunk bug! Handcraftily is constantly working on new jewellery designs and can normally be found making a creative mess somewhere!!
with a selection of her work.

Her work is available available to purchase in store at Flutterby Art Boutique and I would highly recommend a visit to truly appreciate the beauty of Kharis's wonderful work.

You can also shop online in her Etsy shop (http://www.etsy.com/shop/Handcraftily), but for the very latest news from handcraftily please visit her on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/Handcraftily

Princess Lily At The V & A Museum

Wonderfully warm and woolly welcomes to you all today.

Today I am going to share a visit that my wonderfully warm royally appointed parents over at Tigerlily Makes took me on last year to the V & A museum.

Where do I begin? There's so much to say about the V & A, so much history set within one of the most beautiful buildings in the whole of London.

Firstly I should say that the museum is BIG and has several overwhelmingly interesting historical departments, so much so that you will really need to spend the whole day there if not a couple if you can spare it.

Even the staircases are set with beautifully preserved woodwork and amazingly designed floor tiles, mosaics and the like. Not to mention the ceilings, light fittings and architecture - not only in the restaurant but the whole building throughout.

Pictured are just some of the desgin features of the V & A from the Museum rooms themselves to floor tiling and the decandance of the light fittings in the tea rooms.

Introducing Regalily's Time for Afternoon Tea Tea Cosy Kit...

Gooooooood morning lovely makers, creators and all round lovely people! Today I thought I would give you the first peek at one of my brand new felt making kits.  Its regally inspired as you will probably guess from the title... and features 4 stunning roses, these rose are a brand spanking new rose design exclusive to Tigerlily Makes.  Designed by Lisa Marie Olson (that's me) AKA Miss Tigerlily and are a stunning and realistic representation of Miss Tigerlily's passion for all things floral.  The rose itself has been developed and designed to be made effectively and easily, so this makes it very unique not only in look but by the way it is constructed.

As many of you know Miss Tigerlily is a published and accredited paper crafts demonstrator and is well know for mixing paper and textiles together.  This particular rose has been adapted from an old paper craft technique that Miss Tigerlily Developed many years ago. So drawing on her previous years experience of both paper craft and textiles, Miss Tigerlily has breathed new life into this signature rose.

This is then combined with another Miss T passion and that is tea, so a tea cosy and very properly done roses are the perfect combination! Add to that the regency style stripe and you have all the makings of an afternoon tea delight.

This kit is not on the website just yet as my lovely web developer is hard at it, making all the changes for all the new kits we are currently launching! BUT you can email to order yours now info@tigerlilymakes.co.uk.

But for now keeeeeeeeeeep felting!

I have to say that it was only this time last year that I did my first ever trade show, I was a little nervous to begin with, but soon was put at ease by the amazing wonderfully warm and encouraging comments that were made about my designs, stand and by the orders that came in.

Well this year we were back having only been supplying to the trade for just one short year and having learnt so much along the way!

Oh my goodness, as I said last year was brill, but this year was even better!! We had a full on packed stand for the most part of the show and literally 100s per day visited. So I thought I wold share a few pictures of my stand so you can see for yourself what people loved about it.

We worked very hard this year to make sure that we carried out our timeless classic and very vintage style all the way through to our stand display.

What really was the icing on the cake... was to see my old City and Guilds Tutor who came to see us and the stand, to see her sooo proud of what I had achieved from that course to this was just so, so humbling. Thank you Brenda for all your support then and now at The Old Needle Works, where you are exhibiting my work!! Thank YOU!

Hope you like as much as we do.

But for now!! Keeeeeeeeeeeep felting :)

Gooooooood morning world!

Gooooooood morning world, wishing everyone a magnificent first Monday of the month! Can you believe that we are in February already... Just 28 short days until we hit spring time!! Spring is one of my all time favourite times of the year! I just love March and April, when everything starts to bloom... Everything is all fresh and new and bursting with potential. Springtime is fresh, a little warmer but not too warm and everything is coming to life.

So what's your favourite time of the year?

Have a great day and keeeeeeep felting!

Introducing Princess Lily the Lamb...

Welcome lovli makers and creators and generally lovli people, today I thought I would share a little something more about me, my name and my history.

Its all in a name: Lily obviously derives from the flower Lily but also means innocent, graceful, beautiful, loyal, smart, and pure. These are atributes that are required when carrying out my right royal adventures, going about my duties in an honourable and respectful way with grace and dignity

Our family history has been traced back so far to 1833, but it is believed to date back as far as the 16th century with some right royal connections. We will keep you posted as developments arrise. We come from a long line of agricultural workers and miners… so it’s really no surprise to me that we have such strong woolly connections. The family moved to the midlands over 40 years ago to find work in the staffordshire area and fell in love with the county.

So heres a picture of me as I am... a "Herman Teddy Toy" and my alter ego preserved timlessly in digital format, you will see the digitised version of myself on all our kit boxes and co-ordinating marketing. You will also hear from me from time to time as I go about my duties and travels and share news and updates with you from around the country and maybe even further afield!

Well I had better dash mummy is calling so I had better be a good little lamb and get back to my duties. Will be sharing some more adventures very soon. Thank you for visiting and come back soon.
