It’s Back! Ten Reasons Why We Love The Great British Bake Off

Good morning!  Were you one of the millions, glued to the TV at 8pm last night for the return of The Great British Bake Off?  What is it that makes this programme such a success?  Here’s our Top Ten Reasons to love TGBBO.

1.       Mary Berry.  A real national treasure and what Mary doesn’t know about baking, frankly isn’t worth knowing!

2.       Who can fail to withhold a titter every time “soggy bottoms” get a mention!?

3.       It’s so very English! Baking in a marquee, often with the rain battering the canvas as they film.

4.       We all know that giving those biscuits “just two more minutes” will result in burnt offerings for Messrs Berry and Hollywood.

5.       Who will be the first contestant to confuse the sugar container with the cooking salt?

6.       Paul Hollywood.  Those blue eyes and twinkly smile ….. really ladies!

7.       It inspires us to all “have a go”.  Sales of baking products and baking cookbooks rocket when TGBBO is broadcast.

8.       The Technical Bake round.  One recipe.  A multitude of contestants and many differing interpretations of a classic.  Don’t look Mary, don’t look …..

9.       The cover-ups.  Icing over the burnt bits will not get you into the next round.  The judges will find out …..!

10.   The drama, the tears, the forgotten timers, the dough that didn’t rise.

Yes, welcome back to The Great British Bake Off – and roll on next Tuesday!

The Handmade Boutique Webbsite Launch...

Well hello lovely felt fans, as many of you know I am very proud and privileged to be part of a group of high end designers in the Handmade Boutique which opened its doors for the first time on a permanent basis on the 1st July 2013. This followed on from the success of a pilot run in the Mailbox last year.

The boutique is almost a month old and its been a fabulous start.

The boutique features 18 designers who are all local and whom all design, make and produce their own ranges.

The new website has just gone live and on it you can find information about all 18 designers, as well as information on opening times/days, courses and more.

Check out the gallery for just a taster of all the loveliness.

Sweet Tooth Princess Lily & The Vintage Sweet Shop

On a trip to Lichfield recently, Princess Lily decided that she fancied something sweet, so she headed straight for Mr Simms Olde Sweet Shoppe in Bore Street.

Once inside this Aladdin’s Cave of sweet delights, Princess Lily was quite literally spoilt for choice, and immediately sent back in time to when she was a mere slip of a lass, and the plethora of traditional “sweets in jars” shops that used to be the only place to buy your sweeties.

Who can fail to smile at memories of cola cubes, sherbet pips and pineapple chunks – and the sore tongue that often followed after eating them!   Hot summer days spent dipping an orange ice lolly into sharp lemon sherbet crystals, the funny fizz of a packet of Space Dust and the sheer joys (and frustrations) of trying to break a slab of treacle toffee, without the aid of a toffee hammer!

For those of you who enjoy days out at places like the Black Country Living Museum or Blists Hill Victorian Town in Ironbridge – it’s always the old fashioned sweet shops with the longest queues, and it’s not always the children queuing!

Forget buying multi-packs of mass-produced sweets.  Instead, head to your nearest old fashioned sweet shop and treat yourself to whatever takes your fancy.  I bet you won’t stop at one bag either …….!

After buying a quarter of her favourite rhubarb and custards, Lily packed her confectionary treasures into her handmade felt bag http://ow.ly/luEKM and bid farewell to Mr Simms and his jars of sugary gems, until the next time!

Stop Press!!! Beautiful handmade gift from a talented designer…

Hello lovely peeps, makers and creators.

Today I just simply have to share with you the wonderful work of the amazingly talented Skye German. For those of you who don’t know I am an accredited arts & crafts tutor and used to travel the country demonstrating a whole host of crafts and running workshops for a well know craft company. When I opened the felt boutique… I found I had a lot of surplus stash, tools and equipment.

Not wanting this to go to waste I set about selling my personal items on Ebay and this believe it or not is how I met the amazing Skye German. Skye was the winning bidder for my craft stash and we immediately struck a rapport via our email communications. That chance meeting has led to a very special friendship that has been on-going for about 2 years now.

Skye is a wonderful person whom is a full time carer and designs and creates wonderful things to sell around that.  Skyes designs and creations are all very bespoke and unique and are very popular with her audience.

Pictured above is one of Skyes amazing designs which she customised especially for me with my name on it! I immediately fell in love with it when I received it, and it now takes pride of place on our sofa.

I feel so blessed and lucky to have met such wonderfully kind and generous friends in my industry sector.

Thank you so much Skye for your wonderful gift, I absolutely adore it.

The Vintage Emporium - Wrapped Bagged and Tagged...

Hello and a very, very warm, woolly and fully felted welcome to the latest edition of the Tigerlily Makes Blog.  Todays post is brought to you by Chief Feltrepreneur Lisa Marie Olson (that's just me! lol)

So I am very excited to be sharing with you today a lovely independent designer/maker team, The Vintage Emporium - Wrapped Bagged and Tagged who have recently purchased some of TM's lovely ethically sourced high quality felting wools! Buying felting wools is not an oddity in my business, but what is really special is what some of our lovely customers create with their woolly bundles.

Well I had Karen one half of this dynamic duo contact me about buying some wool, we exchanged info and a purchase of the bumper pack of wools was made, out it went and within less than a week Karen set to work on a bespoke vintage piece.  So when Karen pointed me to her stunning work that she had created with the merino wool pack I just HAD!!! to share!

So I will leave you with her work pictured below, but do pop by her page and give her a like and a big cheery wave from me, you will not be disappointed and you can find all the info you need there.

Bowdalicious Slippers and slippertastic slipper making courses.

Well hello there lovely makers, creators and all round lovely people! Today I thought I would share with you another pair of finished slipper samples following a recent slipper course... introducing Bowdalicious hand felted slippers.

The slipper course is one of my favourite courses I just love the end result and the fact that you can actually wear them too is most appealing... though I have to admit, I do like to make them just to have sat next to the fire or on the stairs as pretty decoration!

I also wanted to share with you a recent new find in the form of the handmade buttons that I have used to embellish and complete the look. These stunning buttons have been handmade by a lovely lady called Skye of Button It in the Isle of Lewis, not Isle of Skye as I blundered in my courses video blog below! Skye is a wonderfully creative lady and we met quite by accident and have been sharing our creations and working together ever since. Skye has a keen eye for colour, design and also has a little daring streak in her, by putting together combinations that are fun and quirky too. I will share more of her collection in the coming weeks as I now have rather a gorgeous stash and growing collection of Button It buttons.

But for now I will leave you with the finished slippers adorned with beautiful buttons and to say keeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep felting :)

I have another pair just like these! (giggle giggle)

Featured Artist You Me & Lucia E at Flutterby Art Boutique...

Today we bring you yet another talented designer from the Flutterby Art Boutique at Curborough Craft and Antique Centre near Lichfield. The Boutique is run by the fabulous, bubbly and very lovable Kate Williams AKA Kate Flutterby Art Williams!

So todays post is all about a lovely lady who designs and creates the most adorable girls girls clothes and toys.  This is Helens Story...

Helen is a full-time mummy to her beautiful daughter Lucia. Sewing has run through her family for generations having learnt her craft from her mother.

She started making her daughter’s clothes and general items for around the home but continues to expand her range. This is how “You, Me & Lucia E” was created, to share Helen’s homemade items, principally sewn, but all inspired by beautiful fabrics.

You may have seen Helen’s range of dollies, rabbits and rattles in a local Lichfield boutique called Mooch Kids. All of her dollies and soft toys are CE compliant and safe from birth. So there is real peace of mind that these have been tested and are safe for your little ones to play with.

Helen only uses the finest quality cotton fabrics and 100% wool felt, the detail is exquisite with hand embroidered facial features and personalisation if requested. So these really do feel like a quality product but at the same time unique and individual.

She also showcases at Flutterby Art Boutique and has a dedicated Facebook page which sells these and other items such as little girl's dresses, pretty bunting, children's bags, children's aprons and fabric notice boards.

She says of her new venture “I love what I do, it is a million miles away from my previous career in the commercial banking industry, but I love the creativity and freedom this affords me especially as it enables me to spend quality time with my daughter”.

Here are a few images of just some of the stunning designs Helen creates :)

Cushions O Gloriously Glorious Handmade Cushions!!!

Hello lovely makers, creators and all round lovely people!! Welcome to the very latest's and up to the minute edition of the Tigerlily Makes blog.

Here at Tigerlily Towers, we pride ourselves on excellent craftsmanship, not only in the designs we produce but in supporting those in our industry sector, so today I wanted to share with you some amazing handmade cushions.  2 are made with tweed one welsh tweed the other Harris tweed and 3 completely hand knitted cushions that were a custom made especially for our Chief Feltreprenuer.

Firstly the green and purple button tweed was a lovely find on a holiday in a village gallery, its made with beautiful welsh tweed and I love the simplicity of using simply elegant design with the natural texture of the fabric.

The second cushion is the little cushion in next to the green one with my name on it... this was a gift and was handmade especially for me by my wonderfully talented friend Skye. I just love the work and detail in this cushion and its something I really treasure. Skye makes all manner of things including some amazing buttons, you can see more of her amazing work on her facebook page

Last but not least the amazingly talented Lesley at Sweet Little Knitted Things who again gifted me these beautiful cushions!! BUT I have to say the whole process was amazing from start to finish. Lesley (Sweet Little Knitted Things) having been knitting for some 50+ years of her life know her knits!! What Lesley doesn't know about knitting isn't worth knowing.

So Lesley (Sweet Little Knitted Things) came to visit and she brought along a family heirloom in the form of this amazingly hand crafted, hand knitted patchwork blanket. This blanket I have to say is visually stunning... it has  beautiful colours you could want and each patchwork piece has been loving crafted to create a bespoke knitted designs on it. What was lovely was that I could literally choose from copious amounts of colour ways and pick and choose which knitted stich I wanted in what format on which ever cushion I chose. It was the most liberating process.  You can keep up to date with Lesley on her Sweet Little Knitted Things facebook page.  A little time later 3 cushions appeared in my selected colour ways and designs. So lets not talk about them any more lets just see them in all their glory.

Titch Design was set up in 2012 after designer Rachel Wiseman (aka Titch) graduated from university with a first class BA Hons degree in Graphic Design. Titch Design strives to be and is extremely proud to be 100% British designed and made!

Titch Design was thrilled to be selected to have space to showcase her work in the Flutterby ArtBoutique, Curborough Craft Centre. A brilliant opportunity to sell her products along side many other talented designer makers in a fabulous little boutique.

Todays Featured Artist at the Flutterby Art Boutique

Hello lovely makers and creators we we have another treat for you today as we feature another talented artist at the fabulous Flutterby Art Boutique run by Kate Williams bringing local talent together.

Today we feature Pat Wilkes and this is what Pat has to say about her creative journey...

"I have been crafting from a very early age, my mom taught me how to knit and crochet and I love anything creative. Over the years I have made jewellery, cards, scrapbooks and also textile projects. I still make cards and jewellery but tend to have settled on the keepsake and gift market.

My passion at the moment is vintage linens and vintage wooden items which can be up cycled and made into something unique and beautiful, giving them a new life in this modern world. I think I am at my happiest when I am creating a new piece, but I can be my own worst critic like most creative people.

I am so happy to now have some of my stock at the Flutterby Art Boutique at CurboroughCraft Centre something I never thought would ever happen, a complete dream come true."

International Craft Hobby & Stitch Trade Show

Hello lovely makers, creators and all round lovely people... my apologies for being a little on the quiet side this week! BUT!! as you can probably guess from today's blog title, we have been at the ICHF show for 3 days, which has been mega full on!

I have to say that it was only this time last year that I did my first ever trade show, I was a little nervous to begin with, but soon was put at ease by the amazing wonderfully warm and encouraging comments that were made about my designs, stand and by the orders that came in.

Well this year we were back having only been supplying to the trade for just one short year and having learnt so much along the way!

Oh my goodness, as I said last year was brill, but this year was even better!! We had a full on packed stand for the most part of the show and literally 100s per day visited. So I thought I wold share a few pictures of my stand so you can see for yourself what people loved about it.

We worked very hard this year to make sure that we carried out our timeless classic and very vintage style all the way through to our stand display.

What really was the icing on the cake... was to see my old City and Guilds Tutor who came to see us and the stand, to see her sooo proud of what I had achieved from that course to this was just so, so humbling. Thank you Brenda for all your support then and now at The Old Needle Works, where you are exhibiting my work!! Thank YOU!
